Τα πνευστά όργανα συνήθως διαιρούνται σε δύο μεγάλες ομάδες: ξύλινα και χάλκινα. Αυτή η διάκριση είναι κάπως παραπλανητική γιατί ένα σύγχρονο «ξύλινο» πνευστό δεν είναι απαραίτητα φτιαγμένο από ξύλο, ούτε ένα «χάλκινο» πνευστό από χαλκό. Η διαφορά αναφέρεται όχι τόσο στο υλικό από το οποίο είναι φτιαγμένα τα όργανα όσο στον τρόπο τον οποίο παράγεται ο ήχος, και η χροιά.
