Το μεγαλύτερο, άρα και βαθύτερο, τύμπανο είναι η γκρανκάσα (bass drum), με πλούσιο και δυνατό ήχο. Στις συμφωνικές ορχήστρες το όργανο αυτό χτυπιέται με ειδικό ‘’κόπανο’’, ενώ στο σύνολο των τυμπάνων, στα μικρά συγκροτήματα, υπάρχει ειδικό σύστημα που επιτρέπει το χτύπημα με το πόδι.
