Το φαγκότο είναι το μεγαλύτερο μέλος της οικογένειας των ‘’ξύλινων’’ πνευστών .Έχει διπλό καλάμι στο επιστόμιό του. Τελειοποιήθηκε από τον Βέλγο οργανοποιό A. Sax και είναι ένα από τα κυριότερα όργανα της ορχήστρας.
Χάρη στην ιδιότυπη ‘’φωνή’’ του, μαλακή, λίγο βραχνή, ίσως και λίγο αστεία, οι συνθέτες το μεταχειρίζονται πολλές φορές για να υπογραμμίσουν κάποια κωμική σκηνή, με το μουσικό να παίζει τις νότες ‘’κοφτά’’ (staccato).
Το κόντρα-φαγκότο είναι το όργανο με τους βαθύτερους ήχους της οικογένειας, χρησιμοποιείται όμως σπάνια.
